Data protection

We store your data as securely as is practical, respecting your privacy. It is stored in a few locations: mainly in secure servers within datacenters owned and operated by Google, although some of your data will be data will be stored in our offices or on mobile devices or with our appointed third parties.

We store data for a minimum of 20 years after the point of last contact, after which it may be securely destroyed.

Due to the nature of our business we need to store data for a long time. We have relationships with farms that cover generations of animals, and the aim of our commercial services is to process data to predict future performance at the level of the farm and the individual animal from historical data, including data generated by that animal’s parents and grandparents, and seasonal changes on the herd.

For example, with the average lifespan of the UK dairy cow being 5yr, 50% of cows live longer than this period, with some cows living to 15 years of age. Even 20 years’ of historical performance would not be sufficient to capture all data from these older cows’ parents and grandparents. In addition, many effects on farms are seasonal, and require many years of data to identify beyond random ‘noise’.

It is not uncommon for clients to renew subscriptions after a lapsed period. We do not continue to collect data when a subscription has lapsed. However, we retain historical data for a minimum of 20 years to allow returning customers to enjoy the full benefits of services based on their historical data. Therefore, unless the customer requests us to forget them, we retain data for a minimum of 20 years after last contact.

We believe that 20 years is a reasonable time scale, and after 20 years we review the customer and take decisions on data retention on an individual basis. We assess each customer on an individual basis and where appropriate we retain the data for an extended period.

When deemed appropriate data is securely deleted, and/or shredded at the end of the retention period.

A small amount of data – such as analytics data on our website – is stored permanently.
